Much of this work was generated in free flowing creative bursts, examining topical and personal issues in series of digitally
manipulated photographic images. Displayed in this exhibit are one, or a few of each series of images which are fueled by
music, feeling states, or simple expressions in the moment. Generally, the exhibit explores deeper worlds, underneath our
day to day lives and mysteries or "that which cannot be spoken."
The computer has been a great tool for quickly generated pieces. Photo-based work is instantly gratifying and the generation
of an idea happens quickly with few obstacles to expression. If one has the electronic means to do so, one can generate many
images in a short period of time insuring quick delivery from concept to hard copy.....
My association with digital photo/film based work started in the eighties with a stint as a video 'colorizer' in production
at the controversial Colorization INC. Copies of black and white films were digitally painted by artists (many art students
were exploring "electronic light media" and had signed up to colorize films) also, many of my family are involved
in the film business or photography and many of those in my circle have been interested in digital photography. I feel comfortable
with the medium both technically and x-pressively.
I studied Photography extensively at OCAD with Peter Sramek, in the late seventies and early eighties and have had many
wonderful collaborative teaching/working sessions with friends, artists and family over the years. I began working in digital
photography, as an almost daily practice in 2001 with the commercial release of the first Polaroid digital camera.
My digital work has been inspired by the experimental films of Maya Deren, Japanese films such as Woman in the Dunes,
Shinoda's Double Suicide and Teinosuke Kinugasa's A Page of Madness, The photography of Bea Nettles, Man Ray and the camera-less
photography of Talbot. The music of Bjork, early works of Kate Bush and the art of Yoko Ono have all been influential in the
development my work.
I have had over twenty exhibits in Toronto since 1984 and have been curator of other exhibitions, My works have covered
topics from AIDS and science, to The Great Witch Craze. My CV and exhibition list are available upon request.
