Mikao Usui was born on August 15, 1865 in the Gifu district of Japan. He created a system of healing that had it roots in
Taoism, five element theory and traditional Chinese medicine with some elements of Tendai and Zen Buddhism.
After spending many years in his search he meditated at Kurama Yama in the region of an energy "hotspot". He
is said to have sat for twenty one days after which he was given the information he required to complete his system.
He is then said to have spent seven years in the poor district of Kyoto before opening a school in Tokyo, where he passed
on the information to sixteen students before dying on March 9, 1926 in Fukuyama. His title was Sensei.
Traditional Japanese Reiki is a close reconstruction of Usui's original system and is based on material provided by Tatsumi-sensei.
Usui-sensei's method of healing is composed of the following components:
The energy and the means of using that energy
A set of ideals to be used by students and teachers of the system
A method of passing on the system
In Traditional Japanese Reiki, the system has been broken down into four divisions:
The Practitioner Division contains material traditionally taught in Reiki first and second degrees. Material taught in
classes includes the "precepts" and hand positions. The symbols traced from actual originals passed down from Usui-sensei
are presented with factual information about their origins and use.
The Advanced Practitioner Division contains material not explained in Western Reiki systems. This level teaches self empowerment
and requires a solid understanding of the Practitioner division material. Students are expected to have audited the Practitioner
Level classes at least twice
and have treated at least 100 clients before moving on to The Advanced Practitioner Level however there is no specific
amount of time to have lapsed between levels. All three levels will not be offered to the same students in one weekend.
The Teacher Division follows on from the advanced Practitioner division. It enables the student to pass on the practitioner
levels and is a from of apprenticeship.
The Senior Teacher Division. Only Senior Teachers can train another Teacher. This level requires a lengthy study of the
inner workings of the system and the writing of a thesis and more.
Traditional Japanese Reiki (TJR) Classes and sessions, as offered in Toronto, by Catherine Tammaro, utilise the system
brought to the west by Dave King from Japan in 1995. TJR is based on the teachings of the Vortex Reiki School in Japan. Dave
King spent some time with Toshitaka Mochizuki, Ayumi Sato and Dr Matsuoka, all teachers of the Vortex Reiki School.
Dave was able to access this material as a result of his extensive research and training spanning some thirty years, commencing
in 1971 in Morocco, with Yuji Onuki. Dave and Shen Lissa (Melissa Riggall) met Onuki-San during a qigong convention there.
In 1995, they further had an opportunity to expand their understanding of Usui's teachings in rural Japan when they chanced
upon Tatsumi-sensei, who had studied with Chuujirou Hayashi from 1927 to 1931.
Traditional Japanese Reiki is an application of Usui-Do. Usui-Do represents the early teachings of Mikao Usui. The Usui-Do
Eidan was founded by Tenon-In, a Buddhist lay nun who studied with Usui from 1921 to 1926. It is currently maintained by a
third participant in the 1971 Morocco trip - Lin Tan-Wu (aka George Mullen). At this point in time, only Dave King and Laurie
Anne King are authorized to present Usui-Do in its 1925 form known as Usui Teate.
Catherine trained with Dave and Adrienne Bouchard in Traditional Japanese Reiki and is currently offering Traditional
Japanese Reiki treatment sessions and classes. Prior to her training with Dave and Laurie Anne, Catherine was taught in the
Western Traditions of Reiki by Lani Kaito of The Reiki Alliance (1991) and to Western Master level by Eveline Fleurmann, of
Toronto (1994). Catherine's intense desire to go deeper into the system was fulfilled when a friend put Catherine and Dave
in touch in 1997.
Catherine has been practicing and teaching The Usui Healing System for seventeen years with the exception of a hiatus
from teaching, to pursue other interests. Catherine has been given the profound gift of working with many terminally ill patients
over the years and feels she has gained tremendous insight by doing so. Catherine is very happy to have resumed teaching.
Catherine would like to extend her gratitude to all of her Teachers and health practitioners, including The Venerable
Khenpo Sonam Rinpoche, Shakya Dorje, Ani Jamyang, Sat Dharam Kaur, Dr. Ingrid Tarman and for all associated with The Usui
Healing System; Dave King and Laurie Anne King, Bruce Davis, Adrienne, Lani, Eveline and her many clients and students over
the years for their extensive explorations of Reiki and other healing modalities and teachings ~ and their substantial generosity
in doing so.
Class schedules will be posted on Catherine's TJR website and sessions are available for individuals at Catherine's studio/treatment
space in Toronto. Please contact Catherine using the link provided for session and class fees.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
